I was brought up by a Catholic mother and an atheist father and educated by Christian Brothers at St Marys College Crosby. By 14 yrs old I had given up believing in God ,there was no place for Him in my life, as far as I was concerned He didn’t exist and if He did He was irrelevant. I eventually joined Liverpool Fire Brigade and became on of the boys , plenty of beer wild nights out not going home for days on end.
Then one of my best mates George declared that he had become a Christian which caused great amusement and had stopped going out with the rest of us . I met Pat who was a Firewoman and in 1966 we married . I left the Fire Brigade and life was good we had three children and were very happy.
Jehovahs witnesses used to come around but I was always at work so I said to Pat invite them around one evening and we will have a laugh with them. They came around a lovely young couple about our age and I started off with evolution, prove God exists etc to which they had an answer from their Bible, I had never read the Bible so couldn’t argue with them but I couldn’t believe everything they said some things didn’t add up. I was worried because I felt Pat was getting too involved with them but what to do? It was 11.oopm I decided that as George was the only person I had ever heard who said he was a Christian I would try and find him. In Liverpool there were 15 fire stations with 3 watches on each where could he be ? was he still a fireman? I rang a station and George answered the phone. George had not long been married but he and his wife Ruth came over and in a few weeks and many questions later they led us to the Lord. When they first came Pat made sandwiches and I grabbed one and started eating when Ruth said we like to give thanks for the food, Pat said that’s ok I make supper for all our visitors . That was 40yrs ago and God has been faithful to us in all that time. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren and we couldn’t imagine what life would be like without Jesus .
